Eating organic foods is one of our main priorities. I’m interested in good quality food since my early twenties. At that time, there were not many places with organic options, even in Lisbon. The “boom” of natural products came years after. I remember I used to feel marvelous by entering the organic supermarkets in Brest (France), every time I visited my sister (she lives there).
Now we see a big change, not only in the market’s world, but in people’s minds as well. The health and environment big concerns took us into this continuous search for quality in food and other aspects of life.
Now, we can find many places with great organic products here in Lisbon: many outdoor and indoor organic markets, natural products stores, organic vegan and non-vegan restaurants, and also we have organic options in some of the common large supermarkets.
From the Farm to Our Homes
We like to buy our own foods, especially when it comes to fresh fruits and vegetables; we then can choose the ones that look and smell the best. But why not to live the great experience of having the foods we want, directly from the farm into our home?
Some months ago, we searched for organic places, that produce and bring natural fruits and vegetables to people’s houses. We ended up finding this great farm, with very nice people, where they grow everything completely natural, no chemicals at all. Their name is Cabaz Natura, they are in Sesimbra, which is at the south of Tejo’s river, not too far from Lisbon. We are waiting for the best moment to visit them and getting to know the place. In the meantime, we share two of the baskets we got lately.
Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
We are now having a high raw vegan diet, which means our life became very colorful, as the plants shine much more in their original state!!!
We like to cut the fennel in very thin slices and press it with a bit of sea salt, to become more tender and digestible. Then, we add it to our salads. We can also use it in our smoothies and juices. The leaves are great for decorating dishes.
We usually add apples and pears in our green smoothies and juices. These fruits are neutral, in terms of flavor and food combinations. We also eat them whole, which is the best option of all. This way, we consume all the nutrients in a naturally balanced proportion, that perfectly fit into our bodies needs.
We also have cauliflower and broccoli, that we like eating raw and, sometimes, a bit dehydrated. If you find quite hard to eat them raw, and you really want to have their original benefits, do this: cut them in very tinny pieces, add some tender green leaves, such as lettuce and watercress, and then add a seed/nut/avocado homemade sauce. It can be really, really delicious and you won’t miss the cooking process at all.
The mushrooms are also part of our diet. These ones are gigantic! We usually marinate them overnight and then we dehydrate them only a few hours, to get the best taste and also keep them moist. Our body is made of about 70% of water, so it’s good not to dehydrate too much our foods.
We love lettuce. This is our salads‘ best friend. It fits anyway, even like a wrap to hold the vegetables.
Remember, if you juice (slow juicer) sweet fruits and vegetables, you end up with only the sugar they contain, as you lose all the fiber. It’s good to use a small quantity of the sweet ones and a large quantity of the green ones, like leaves, cucumbers and celery stalks. Smoothies (quick blender) are more suitable if you want the strong sweet fruit flavor, as you keep all the fiber. We like to juice or blend fruits, green leaves, sprouts, and wild herbs. It’s one of the tastiest parts of our day.
